**Since Irish wool is rarely available from mills, crafters who wish to make with more than a small quantity of Irish wool need to purchase raw fleeces. (i.e. at Irish Fibre Crafters sell small quantities of carded Irish wool, some of it also dyed, but if a maker would like more than a few hundred grams they’d likely need to buy a fleece and do the whole process their self.) The process starts off with the fleece being ‘skirted’ to remove any twigs, pieces of straw, and poop (sheep still haven’t learned to use toilet paper!) The fleece is then washed, often several times, and then dried; although for some projects the washing and drying occurs later in the process. If colour other than the natural colour of the sheep is needed, then the crafter must dye the wool these colours, which is another involved process. After this the wool is combed or carded to straighten out the fibres, and this is often done with hand tools. If the crafter is fortunate enough to have/borrow a drum carder, the process is less labour intensive but the drum carder still needs to be fed the fibre, cranked, and fibre removed by hand. Finally, the next process may be the making of the object, but of course if you are spinning yarn in order to knit an item you still have the spinning, then plying, of the yarn to get done first! Yes, handcrafting with Irish wool in this manner is definitely a labour of many many hours of love and skill!
