Beginning to Spin

As a child, did you ever see your Granny or Auntie at a spinning wheel? Were you fascinated at the way she could magically turn the fleece into yarn for knitting? If you are still fascinated in this ancient craft, you might consider learning this skill for yourself.

Hand spinning is one of those traditional crafts that just seems to feed the soul. Once you get the hang of it, spinning is very relaxing, and you can drift with the meditative-like flow or have a chat whilst spinning— like so many of our ancestors did. The very basis of many of the fibre crafts, spinning is an extremely practical skill to have, and in this day workshop you will learn the basics of how to use a hand held drop spindle as well as the spinning wheel. You will be introduced to the fascinating variety of sheep’s wool we have here in Ireland, too.

This is a class for the total beginner. You don’t even have to have ever been close to a sheep, their fleece, or a spinning wheel. If you have a wheel and would like to use it, bring it along. Otherwise, just bring yourself and a desire to hand spin. Oh, and please bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Class limited to 4 people. Dates to be confirmed. Sign up below to get notified when dates are announced
